How To Stay Fit And Not Gain Weight While On Vacation

If you're about to enjoy a much deserved vacation, you're undoubtedly looking forward to every second. However, you may also be concerned that all the hard work you've accomplished thanks to sticking to a good diet and exercise routine will be lost while you're on vacation. Fortunately, strategies exist to ensure that those on vacation don't bring back too many unwanted souvenirs in the way of extra pounds. Following are three ways to minimize weight gain and loss of muscle tone while you're on vacation.

Choose an Active Adventure

Naturally, you're going to want to reserve some of your vacation time for unabashed leisure, but balancing lounging on the beach with physical activity during the day provides the best of both worlds. For instance, if you're going to be relishing a sojourn in wine country, look and see if bicycle tours of area wineries are available -- they're becoming more popular all the time. If you're going to be visiting Florida during the winter for some a much-needed sun break, stay at a hotel with a pool or a fitness center where you can work in a workout during the course of your day.

If nothing else, simply go for a brisk walk each morning. It'll get you energized for the day mentally as well as physically.

Explore Ethnic Cuisine

One of the reasons why food in quality restaurants tastes so good is because it's generally prepared with lots of butter and salt because these ingredients enhance the flavor of foods that might otherwise be bland. However, some types of ethnic cuisine, particular those which rely heavily on strong herbs and spices for flavor, pack a far lighter calorie punch yet still deliver a satisfying taste.

You can try a different type of food on International Drive each night of your vacation and probably come home with some great dinner ideas. Japanese cuisine, for instance, is known to be notoriously healthy, and if you like strong flavors without the calories, be sure to spend at least one evening enjoying an Indian restaurant.

Don't Skip Meals

Some vacationers skip meals on purpose, telling themselves that they're saving up for the evening meal. This strategy almost always backfires -- it's likely that you'll wind up overindulging during the evening meal.

However, don't deny yourself minor splurges when the occasion calls for it -- after all, you're on vacation, and allowing yourself small indulgences helps fend off major cravings.
